- The Accelerated Reader Program combines the best of children’s literature with a computer based program that tests comprehension. Students in grades 1st- 5th participate. There are three steps that provide the foundation for self-paced, individualized reading.
The main objectives of the program are:
*to develop a lifelong love of reading
*to help students become independent, self-direct readers
*to help students achieve optimal reading growth
How to do Accelerated Reader
Select a Book - Students select an AR book based on their reading and interest level. Books with t various reading levels are available in the Donelson library. Books that are AR will be labeled with a color coded sticker system.
Read the Book - Students read their books at their own pace. Teachers may elect to set aside time during the day for independent reading. Students get so excited about the program, they read every chance they get! As students grow more involved with good literature, they eagerly discuss books and recommend them to friends.
Take a Test - Students will take a multiple-choice test. Tests generally have five or ten multiple choice questions that are carefully designed to verify that the student has read the book. After completion of the test, students will be given a score and awarded points based on the number of questions answered correctly. Encourage your child to thoroughly read a book before taking the test!
